Post subject: Hatch Hinges, how many

This thread has been split from another thread so it can stand alone. Dawg.

From Simpson36:
I'm working on a solution.

I've placed an ad in a hobby metal caster's forum and e-mailed a vendor that manufactures 3D printers (for prototyping).

Even more promising is a lead to a fellow who does prototyping in his garage on CNC machines and is right here in Phoenix!

It would help to get these questions answered:

If they can be made to fit perfectly and not stretch but not be exact physical reproductions, would you still buy them?

If exact physical reproductions are needed, how much more would you pay for them . .

Here is the only place I've ever seen them advertised:

More from Simpson36

I met with a machinist over the weekend.

He looked at a photo of the complete hinge, Dawgs Cad drawing and our CE.

He estimates $150 a pair machined from steel. In this case the hinges would not be exact duplicates of originals, but they would fit without modification and not stretch.

I am also looking into getting them sand cast in small quantities by casting hobbiests, but I have no feed back on that yet.

Die casting is not going to happen because there is not enough volume.

For myself, I don't care if the new hinges exactly match the originals (Actually I don't know if we can even do that without getting GM's approval). I just want hinges that won't stretch and allow us to use the hatch and keep the window sealed up. Strong steel hinges will do that.

We can all keep our original hinges stored next to our original struts in case we ever want to show the car and not take a hit on points.

The next step in this process is going to be getting feedback from CE owners to determine what the demand will be for hinges.

I'm interested.

It is risky to try and bend them back into shape.

I don't care if their exact reproductionsor not. I just want some that work. I'll go with what everyone else wants. I would perfer not to spend over $500 for a set.

While i have mine bent back once, if in the future i could avoid doing that that would be nice. So yes, count me in (given the estimated $150 price). Also, what about shipping ? Phoenix AZ to each member. And steel would be heavy wouldnt it ? Just to get an idea.. Not that it would hinder me getting a set.

At this point, it wouldnt be pressing for me to get them, but it would be nice to have for the future..
