The correct color for the Wheels is Dupont B8311J or B8311K Medium sand gray.

Take one of your best center caps with you to color match though...

Can you tell me the type of paint to use? Do I need a primer prior to painting?

I do plan on clear coating.

I would use primer prior to painting the rims.

Clean, prime, paint and coat. 8)

Not sure which paint to use. I hope Desertdawg or someone else will know.

That's why I put the name Dupont in front of the Dupont numbers....

Of course you could have your paint store cross match the Dupont numbers to any brand you want to use. Or like I said, take in one of your center caps and have them color match it.

Be sure to take some pictures of your work, it's always fun to see them transform..

However, Dupont has different "kinds" of paint. There is acrylic enamel, urethane, etc. What type is recommended, not brand?

I also heard that I need to put an acid etch down to make the primer stick to aluminum. Anyone heard of that?

I had my collector wheels chromed in CA by copper plating, nickel plating, then chromed. When I got them back, I masked off each fin and then sandblasted the chrome to be painted to etch it. I then used epoxy black primer to prime the chrome, then I took in a center cap to match the color and used a one step urethane to spray 2 coats of color on. While it was still tacky, I removed the masking tape on each fin and used a rag with reducer to carefully wipe each fin so that the edges were smooth and that took away any "bleeding" that occured back under the masking tape. It turned out beautifully. I'll email Dawg the pictures so he can post it here.

Thanks Dawg for posting these pictures.
Have you guys noticed that I painted the rocker
panels below the doors the same metallic brown as the
pinstripe and faded emblems.
I think GM should have done that to begin with.
I also painted the front grilles. It looks to me that GM
wanted to use stickers everywhere they could and since
they couldn't use a sticker on the grilles and rockers, they
left them black like the other vettes.

Did you paint the front grills also, or just the side vents???

I know Steve did paint the front grilles and possibly the sides as well.

Here is what Steve said (in BOLD) about his front grilles. I bet they look good too. :D

I also like is rear wing with the ghost flames on it. 8)
