Steve, I bought a set of universal struts at an auto zone a few years ago, they work fine. The only differences I noted were the length was a little longer, and the ends looked different, but they worked.

I used to have a thread on here with all the info, but it must have gotten lost with the move. If your interested I can get part numbers and brand names....

Steve,I found the guys # that I bought my car from.I'll try and get ahold of him ASAP and see if he remembers where he bought his struts from.I also would like to tell people that are on the fence about getting a pair because theirs are working fine for now.Beleive me they will fail.If you plan on keeping your CE or for that matter if you sell it that will be a strong selling point.Get a pair while there avaliable.If anybody ever repops these like the orignials they won't be worth it in the long run.This is just my honest opion.

I already have part numbers for struts for other cars that will work in a CE, I can special order correct length struts for $150 which still won't fit right and I've already wasted almost $200 on Eckler's struts that don't fit.

I'm only interested in information about actual exact reproductions.

As to the hinges, I have nothing to add to my post in the Cross fire forum.

Here is the current status: 2nd design prototype is going to 'Copter. 3rd (production) design prototype I agreed to make for a fellow in Mesa and is scheduled to install next Sunday. I made a set for for the e-bay listing which is already spoken for if it doesn't sell there, and I made one more set which I am keeping to trade for other special CE parts that I may want down the road. I have no plans at this time to make any more hinges.

FYI, I paid about $40.00 for my struts, they are not exact repo's, but they don't bind and they open the glass smoothly...

Also, I was about to order a set of your hinges, but now I have to come up with about $1500.00 to repair my daughters truck that was vandalized Saturday night... I can live without hinges now!


Sorry if this has caused a problem between us, I would really hate to loose the camaraderie of another CE owner...

Copter;

Struts and material to adapt them came yesterday. I put together two pairs.

It's hard to tell from the photo since the rod is actually black, but the struts are installed rod-down as they are designed to work, so the rod gets lubricated and the end-of= travel damping works.

They are not exact repro, but they look similar.

They fit perfectly and open the glass smoothly up to within the last few inches and then the damping slows the glass down for a very gentle stop. No more slamming the glass open. Nickolette is delighted with them!.

You get the second pair.

I'm selling the Eckler's struts in the sale section if anyone is interested.

As far as I am concerned, Steve is a genius. These hinges are Super. Copter is really going to be pleased.

Yes I'm still working on my install.I'm the only person in the history of the world that can take a 2-3 hour job and turn it into a 3 week project.Problem is that I only have a little time to do anything after I get home from work.Gotta pick up the little girl from the YMCA get her fed help with any homework and on top of that I had to fix what bubba did to the hinges before I could begin to do it right.Had to wait for parts from Steve.I'm back on it today though.Hope to be finished this weekend.I'll let you know how it went.By the way these hinges are a beautiful piece of engenering.Perfect,super strong and they look better than stock.I painted mine body color.

Steve,I just did a measurment.With the plastic spacer in the pivot hole.From the center of that hole to the glass mounting point I'm right at 3 1/2".just like Jays.

The shims did the trick.I think I need one more of the thin ones and I'll be home.I did not use any of the factory ones you sent me so I'll be sending those back with the $100.00 I owe you.

To answer your question, yes I believe you are serious and I would consider making several sets at once, but buyers would have to come forward as a group, and I don't see that happening. So from that perspective, I can't help you.

On the other hand, I was keeping the last set of hinges to trade for something but I was able to buy a spare CE wheel and I really don't need anything else for the car. Better for someone to enjoy the hinges than have them sit on a shelf, so you can have the last set.
