When I bought the car someone had doctored the wiring harness a bit to pump up the stereo, well when I got it the stock alternator was gone, and it has had charging problems from the beginning. someone told me it needed a 105 amp, but napa tells me it is a 75 amp..anybody know which it is?

Hi,
I checked mine, and it has stamped on it the numbers 1101 075 070A.
I don't know if it is original or not.
So I think mine has a 70 amp alternator. I'm not sure if this is the standard, or what, I will try to find out some more info for you.

The difference in alternators was because of the heated rear glass.
That must have taken a lot of amps to run, because GM put a much
bigger alternator in for the heated glass option. I understand that
the case itself is much bigger.
I ordered a custom wound 120amp unit from a parts store since I
had a big subwoofer system and needed power for the amp. But
as soon as it came in, I carefully took it apart(scary on a brand new
part) and put the two halves in a wooden vise, sanded smooth with
a makita palm sander with fine paper,then used a regular
car buffer and pad with buffing compound to buff it to look like
chrome! Wow! I had a nice shiny alternator for around 110bucks.
From what I hear, buffing your alternator to chrome finish is better
than real chrome as it cools much better than the chrome plating.

Atlternator with no rear defrost is 63 amps part # 1979865. Alternator with rear defrost is 70 amps part # 1101070.
