Help....what temperature should a the 82CE operate at? I cannot find this in any of my shop manuals. My engine has no modifications so I am looking for the GM recommendation.

The computer is set to go into open loop at 195 degrees, below that and your running rich in warm up mode.
The axillary fan is supposed to kick in around 220 degrees, and mine will usually keep it in that range if I drive it hard during non peak temp. days.

I live in the southwest part of Arizona where the summer temps run up to 120 degrees during the day, I have driven my CE in those temps and the gauge will usually run normally around 225 degrees, if I run it hard it will climb into the 130's but I try to keep it from getting any higher.

As long as your using some quality oil, I wouldn't worry about it unless it climbs above 225 all the time.

Thanks.....Last weekend I drove 2000 miles in 90+ temp and my temp guage was a constant 215 - 220 (needle is straight up and moves to just right of the top big white mark). When idling, I saw the fan running. I just had it in the shop for breaks and the mechanic said the radiator needed replacing since it was full of white stuff built up on the inside. Said there was no immediate danger, but something I needed to do. I use Mobil 1 synthetic and just changed it before the trip.

From what you stated, it sounds like this is a normal operating temperature and I don't need to replace my radiator anytime soon.

Kerry, Mine runs at a steady 200 when driving in hot humid weather and when down in PF I was running at 205. Had no problems.

Kerry, You'll be ok without replacing your radiator. You temp as you told me is good and your fan runs so that is a positive too.

Hmmm....Mike, I think you put a new radiator in last year...Right? And Desertdawg, how old is your radiator?

The shop manual says we have a stock 195 thermostat, so with a good cooling system I would expect engine temperature like yours Mike, in the 200 range......seems like 215-220 too high or does the ECM compensate fuel/air/timing to optimize performance

Kerry, Yes I replaced my radiator last year. Check your thermostat. Maybe that is worn down from just sitting around all those years. Not sure on the ECM.

My rad. is about 3 years old with new antifreeze replaced this spring. I just see the high temps in the summer, when the outside air temps get above 110 or more. During the winter months I usually run about 200.

I would advise against REPLACING the radiator- worst case if it s not leaking-pull it and have it rodded out, I think you can do that even though it sould be an aluminum rad. If you do replace it - save the old one. Dont go changing thermostat to a lower temp one, that would be a bad idea also. You WILLL notice a significant gas mileage reduction as that engine needs to run up there in the 210 range to be efficient as designed. Been there/done that.
