Well the day is looking up I called Jasper remanufactured motors today they said they have a motor for my car and that they could rebuild mine if I wanted. I took some pics of the 6th plug that is causing me the problem.......... wish I new how to put them on the website

Click on browse and go to where you keep your pics on your pc - select the pis and click up load - then copy the address in the Url for forums box and past it into your message on this forum - your pic should then show on your posting - hope it works

Sorry to hear about your engine. It's a little strange that rings would be bad after only 38,000 miles, but it sounds like you've been fairly thorough. Just make sure it's not a head/valve problem first. If you need a new/rebuilt engine, Jasper has a good reputation and a good warranty. One thing to think about... if you want to keep it original, then getting your motor rebuilt would be the way to go.

Glancing at these threads I don't see that you mentioned your comfort level with wrenching on your ride. :?

Sounds like it may be the time to get your hands greasy / oily and do some checking. If you have access to a compression tester you might check the 6th cylinder and the ones on either side and compare pressures. If the engine runs without a miss (and doesn't backfire) after you replace the plug then the rings are the most likely and looking at the amout of oil after 12 miles?? :shock: they are also most likely broken rather than stuck. If it were me I would make a decision before I drove a great deal more as a broken ring can score a cylinder requiring a bore job rather than honing and new pistons, raising the price considerably. Pumping that much oil indicates a real problem not just routine wear, but with only 38000 mi it should be confined to that cylinder. The compression test would give you the answer. Since you say the engine runs good after replacing the plug #6 must have some compression or you would still have a bad miss.

What do the other plugs look like?? :?:

Anyway, still not time to panic, just a little effort and all should be well. :)

Good morning to all,

Well the other plugs look like the day I put them in BRAND NEW. As soon as i replace the 6th plug 10 miles of drivng and well you have seen the pick. I did a compression check on all the cylinders the 6th one is low but stiil there. I feel the same way you do with only 38k on the car this sure is a heartbreak for me . Considering I only put 1k on it my self since I owned it.

Either way its going to get fixed I am calling Japer this morning, later on and we will fix this problem real quick. the rest of the car is just absolutly surperb........... And With Steve making me my hinges I will have everything complete. Its just a damn shame that the engine has these problems but a good lesson here too ..........let a car sit for many years with out properly storing it and stuff like this happens........

Anyway I am not driving her she is sittng in my garage wating for her new power plant.........

Hang in there man, I still say that you will be more happy than sad when you get the answer to the puzzle. If the other cylinders have good compression it may be quite inexpensive to get back up and running again.

Well here is an update.

We pulled the engine out yesterday and we broke it down last night Piston rings in #6 cylinder were broken. #8 cylynder was not much better found evidence of oil starting to blow by piston rings.

All in all the way I see it this motor was not taken care of properly when the car was put into storage.

Talked to Jasper it would cost me more to overhaul this engine than just dropping a remanufactured motor in. I ordered the engine and it will be here tomorrow.

Will let you know how it goes........ :roll:

Let me start off by saying: I am NOT a mechanic..

However.. How can an engine's #6 & #8 cylinder go bad after 38k miles ? Mine has been run for 105k and i dont do all that much. As far as i was told, the L83 is a pretty solid piece of machinery.

Someone must have been mistreating this poor engine. I dont think it's just neglect, is what i am trying to say, i guess.. :x


Real sorry you're on the receiving end of this, Warrior. Sounds like you're keeping your chin up though. Good for you !! I would be PIZZED, to say it nicely and the seller wouldnt hear the end of it..

Sorry, i know, i am not helping but it just irks me to no end that someone mistreated this nice car.. :evil:

Sir if I let loose here on how I really feel I would be thrown out of this forum and well i dont want to do that. I just can't believe this has happened. My 1988 has got 168K on it and it runs like it came off the show room floor yesterday.....yes of course I have rebuilt about everything you can on that one.

But to buy a 1982 with 38K originial miles is just unbelievable. But it will be fixed this weekend and I will be back up and running...Of course I wont have to worry about any Xmas presents this year but what the heck......just think it looks good and now it will run good!!!!!!!! By the way to Rebuild the motor I have would cost about $2300.00 dollars thats if eveything is in pretty good shape with normal overhauling procedures.

It was cheaper to buy a remanufactured motor with everything new in it for $1494.00.

WARRIOR.
Whatever you do, don't let go of your original motor, it has the pad stamp that keeps your CE a numbers matching Corvette....

I think they are a little high on the cost of a rebuild, but I guess when you don't do the assembly and leg work yourself, your at the mercy of others..

My suggestion would be to bolt in the crate motor, and start cleaning up your original, you should try to keep the entire motor, don't trade any of it off as core's or just because they are asking for it.
In case you didn't know it, the pistons are Forged flat tops made by TRW with a genuine GM part number.

Also, don't expect a quality motor for $1,500 bucks, your not getting high grade parts for that price.

I couldn't agree with you more .you must be reading my mind . It is my intention that I keep my originial motor. However since I know what is wrong with it I will start looking for the parts I need and somewhere down the road I will have it fixed. In the mean time I have a pretty good motor that will get me around..............
